ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Student Worker Training and Supervision: (50%)
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise Library student workers who provide concierge Information Desk support.
- Collaborate with the Access Services Coordinator to provide Library-specific training and peer support for basic research and information use. Coordinate with other Learning Commons student supervisors to ensure student presence at the Information Desk for all hours determined necessary.
- Coordinate supervision with Librarians and Access Services Coordinator to ensure student employee time is used productively throughout the day, and that all student employees participate in developing displays and programming.
- Provide onboarding and training for all student employees within the Learning Commons:
- To ensure a consistent philosophical approach and knowledge of Learning Commons mission and practices for supporting peer-to-peer learning, effective verbal and non-verbal communication, and professionalism.
- To ensure all student employees within the Learning Commons are trained to provide basic support for accessing Learning Commons services, including use of Navigate and knowledge of the range of services and faculty/staff who provide them.
- Develop training documentation.
- Manage the new hire paperwork and onboarding process for all student employees of the Learning Commons.
- Monitor student employment budget for the Learning Commons.
- Support student employees’ continued development, such as creating peer mentoring, integrating reflective practices into evaluations or applications for subsequent year employment, and implementing ePortfolios to document development of NACE employment skills.
- Serve as a resource to other student supervisors within the Learning Commons by communicating and/or training on budget development, creating yearly allocations, scheduling and time-keeping, and hiring and supervision practices and as indicated by the offices that oversee Federal Work Study and Workship opportunities and Human Resources.
Outreach, Programming, and Administrative Support: (45%)
- Develop and convene a Student Advisory Group.
- Coordinate, develop, and/or provide information about events, services, and other resources available at the Learning Commons.
- Cultivate campus partnerships for microprogramming, tabling, asynchronous, or synchronous in person and hybrid events. Collaborate with Access Services Coordinator to ensure commensurate opportunities for online students.
- Coordinate and promote access to print and online resources that provide research and learning support for students.
- Provide administrative support for programs and events, such as but not limited to creating or posting signage, planning and posting/submitting publicity, ordering food, managing online access to hybrid events, ensuring location set-up and tear-down for afternoon events.
- Initiate and maintain a comprehensive calendar of Learning Commons events, including workshops, faculty development, and student-initiated events.
- Collect and manage data on engagement with Learning Commons programming. Participate in assessment of Learning Commons student learning outcomes and program outcomes.
- Maintain accurate signage and publicity about building hours.
- Manage mail pick-up and delivery.
Other (5%):
- As a back-up to student employees and Librarians, provide basic research support and instruction on using information resources, effective learning strategies, and connecting with other faculty and staff for more specialized support.
- Performs other duties as assigned, within the general scope of the position description.
- Participates in community life and activities of Columbia College.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Associate’s degree or two years of college. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in libraries, education, tutoring, peer mentoring, student support, or related areas applicable to provide additional learning or research support.
- Affinity for social learning, communities of practice, or other cooperative learning environments.
- Demonstrated experience providing collaborative leadership; previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience using best pedagogical practices for active learning preferred.
- Evidence of effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Competence with business math and written and verbal communication suitable in a business or professional setting.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel and Microsoft Teams, or related software.
- Marketing or promotional experience preferred, including graphic design or social media.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work environment risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.
