Career Firefighter/ Paramedic
DEFINITION: Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties, maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; all other related work as required.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
▪ Graduation from high school or equivalent.
▪ Must currently possess certification as a Paramedic in Massachusetts.
▪ Firefighter Level 1 and 2 desirable.
Requirements:
▪ A valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
▪ Ability to pass a job-related medical and/or psychological examination before employment.
▪ Must complete Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program.
▪ Must establish residency within a 25-mile radius of 1 Pembroke St., Kingston, MA, within 12 months of appointment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid and resuscitation; supervises medical emergencies; delegates duties to Firefighter/EMT’s; administers Advanced Life Support when required; performs triage and prioritizes medical needs of multiple patients; calls for additional rescues when needed; communicates by radio or telephone to emergency room of local hospital.
Performs emergency rescue and extrication work in accidents involving elevators, machinery, motor vehicles and the like; searches and removes persons from entrapment in buildings.
Receives and transmits fire alarms by telephone, radio, or other signal systems; relays information to officer in charge and dispatches fire apparatus to fires; operates two-way radio system and telephones for emergency and business calls; keeps records of all actions; receives and verifies alarm and administrative information, selecting
the shortest route to fires, driving apparatus, and operating two-way radios. Writes incident reports, uses computer and standard business office equipment; maintains records and reports as required.
Responds to alarms and emergency conditions to assist in combating and extinguishing fires; performs firefighting activities utilizing fire hose, heavy stream appliances and extinguishers, and ladders; ventilates burning buildings, using forcible entry tools, if necessary; enters burning buildings to evacuate and rescue persons in danger; responds to rescue calls; spreads salvage covers, removes excess water and debris; secures buildings against rekindling, inclement weather, and trespassers.
Maintains, cleans, and inspects rescue equipment; maintains and tests fire apparatus and equipment and fire hose; maintains clean and orderly condition of fire station and performs minor maintenance repairs; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
Teaches in-service emergency medical classes; assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
Attends departmental training courses, company drills and training classes in firefighting and related subjects; participates in routine fire prevention inspections of buildings.
Assists in the administration of all aspects of fire prevention regulations contained in 527 CMR and other applicable codes and ordinances.
Assists in providing public education on fire safety, public safety and related subjects to civic groups, schools and others who request information.
Communicates with other shifts to give and receive pertinent information, relaying orders from officers to firefighters.
Performs similar or related work as required or as a situation dictates.
JOB ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed under conditions which involve personal danger to the incumbent with serious exposure to all types of weather conditions and hazardous environments.
Operates emergency medical aid equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, computer, and telephone.
Has frequent contact with public officials, the general public, hospitals, police department, department of public works, civic groups and state and federal agencies.
Errors could seriously endanger life and property and cause financial and legal repercussions for the town.
Physical Requirements:
▪ Ability to meet required physical standards, minimum age, weight, height, and strength. The firefighter’s position involves physically risky functions under emergency conditions. A firefighter’s functions may include connecting and pulling and operating hose lines; operating a pump; positioning and climbing ladders; emergency rescue and lifesaving; ventilating smoke-filled areas; using and maintaining tools and equipment; and physical training and fire station activities.
▪ Physical agility is required to access all areas at the scene of the fire. Emergencies require pushing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching with hands and arms.
▪ Firefighters may be required to lift/carry equipment or persons weighing more than 100 pounds. Wears personal protective clothing during emergency incidents and training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke.
