JOB SUMMARY
The Safety and Training Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive safety program while leading engaging training initiatives. This role ensures that our facilities comply with all local, state, and federal safety regulations while fostering a culture of safety and continuous learning among employees. The specialist will also be integral in conducting safety training meetings and audits, investigating incidents, and promoting best practices in workplace safety and operational efficiency.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive occupational health and safety program in compliance with OSHA, as well as local, state, and federal safety regulations and industry standards.
2. Develop, implement, and manage, alongside department managers, an employee training and certification program aimed at enhancing employees' job skills and knowledge for their current roles and future advancement.
3. Conduct new hire orientation sessions and arrange on-the-job training for new hires.
4. Collaborate with department managers and conduct surveys to identify training needs based on projected production processes, changes, and other factors.
5. Develop and organize training manuals, visual aids, and other educational materials.
6. Lead Safety Committee team and chair monthly Safety Committee meetings.
7. Coordinate and deliver safety training programs and training for employees at all levels.
8. Train managers and supervisors in techniques and skills for training and managing employees.
9. Conduct regular safety walk-throughs to identify and address potential hazards.
10. Investigate and analyze accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
11. Collaborate with Facilities Engineer to ensure corrective actions are taken in a timely manner.
12. Develop and implement emergency response plans for both Plant and Warehouse facilities.
13. Conduct drills to ensure the readiness of staff in all departments in case of emergencies.
14. Communicate safety expectations and updates to all staff.
15. Collaborate with management to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
16. Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including training records, inspection reports, and incident documentation.
17. Generate reports to track and analyze safety performance.
18. Assist in the development and implementation of employee engagement and recognition initiatives geared towards fostering a positive, safe work environment and promoting teamwork.
19. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as industry standards.
20. Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
A. Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering or related field.
B. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a safety-related role, preferably in a food manufacturing setting.
C. Certification in safety management, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), is preferred.
D. Proven track record of developing and implementing successful safety programs.
E. In-depth knowledge of food manufacturing processes and hazards.
F. Ability to conduct training sessions and engage employees in safety initiatives.
G. Demonstrated experience in conducting investigations and handling employee relations issues.
H. Strong understanding of HR policies, workers' compensation, OSHA regulations, and best practices in food safety.
I. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with employees from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
J. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
K. Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
L. Ability to work in hot temperature environments and a fast-paced production setting.
M. A flexible schedule is required. Must be available to work morning and evening shifts as needed. Must be available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
a. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
b. Capability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds occasionally.
c. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as necessary.
d. Comfortable working in various environments, including production floors, warehouses, and outdoor areas.
e. Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
f. Ability to respond to emergencies during off-hours if needed.
