Stevens Towing Co. of North Carolina, based out of Edenton NC, is URGENTLY looking for an individual with a maritime background to work aboard one of our tugboats as a deckhand.
Stevens Towing Co of North Carolina owns and operates tugboats along with a large fleet of jumbo hopper barges which are used to move Steel, DRI, Wood Chips, Scrap Steel, and Pig Iron. Our tugs primarily travel between our home port in Edenton NC north to Norfolk, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Camden NJ as well as south to Morehead City, Wilmington, and Charleston SC.
Requirements:
- Valid Drivers License (required)
- TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card) Issued by Homeland Security (required)
- Must pass DOT Physical and DOT Drug Screen (required)
- Experience working in the maritime industry (preferred)
- Reside within 300-mile radius of Edenton NC (preferred)

Schedule:
- 28 days on 14 days off
- 14 days on 7 days off
** It is important to understand the structure of our company's working schedule. Employees assigned to a vessel that operates on a 28/14 schedule will be continuously onboard that vessel for 28 days straight. While onboard employees work on a two-watch system, two six hour watches per twenty-four-hour period. Following the completion of an employee's 28 day hitch, the employee will have 14 days off to spend relaxing, with family, personal commitments etc.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Daily Rate will be determined based on experience. Daily Rate starts at $200. Example: an employee who works a schedule of 28/14 works approximately 247 days per year, based on a day rate of $200 the annual gross pay would be around $49,000.
- Employees are eligible for benefits on the 1st of the month following 60 days of employment. STNC offers the following: health, dental, vision, life insurance, short/long-term disability insurance, and 401K with company matching of 4%.
- Employees are eligible to utilize our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) from day one. This is a 100% company paid benefit and is at no cost to our employees.
- STNC covers all costs associated with crew change (flight, rental cars, uber/taxi reimbursements, etc.)
- STNC covers costs for groceries while employees are onboard. Employees are able to choose what groceries they want but are required to stay within the company's monthly budget.
General Job Description:
The expectations for a Deckhand employed with Stevens Towing Co of NC include but are not limited to:
- Ability to understand and comprehend duties/responsibilities given by the Master or Mate.
- Willingness to learn and receive constructive criticism. Being a team player with a positive attitude.
- Responsible for keeping the non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition.
- Responsible for regular engine checks.
- Responsible for changing oil when necessary.
- Required to clean inside and outside of the boat (scrub and wash floors, wash windows, polish brass equipment, wash, and paint exterior decks/bulkheads).
- Responsible for cooking meals and keeping the galley clean. Required to wash dishes after meals. Required to clean the stove and oven weekly.
- Ability to throw heavy lines and secure large working lines quickly.
- Responsible for regularly checking barges.
- Responsible for setting out navigation lights and checking them regularly.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Working Environment:
Constant outside working conditions and frequent engine room conditions with loud noise, fumes, odors, chemicals, dust, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risks of electrical shock, sun glare and /or exposure to arc lights. Occasional inside conditions.
