New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy (NOMMA) School Nurse Position Description
The school nurse serves as a specialist and consultant who works with educators, administrators, and medical agencies to plan, implement, and evaluate NOMMA’s school health program. He / she is the functional lead for medical operations, providing daily expertise to the school’s administrative team on health related matters for 1,000+ students and 120+ employees at a 100,000+ square foot campus. The school nurse reports to the Director of Operations and advises the CEO / Commandant, Principal, and Assistant Principals as required. The school nurse shall hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, be a Louisiana licensed Registered Nurse or hold a Compact State License, and maintain currency in CPR and AED use. This is a 10 month position to facilitate medical support during NOMMA Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps summer camps and orientation. Specific responsibilities include:
- Conduct first aid and triage for NOMMA’s student body.
- Maintain the school medical clinic in compliance with all LDoE and LDoH regulations. Ensure the proper functionality of all equipment. Maintain inventory of medical support equipment and disposable supplies. Coordinate purchase orders with the Director of Operations.
- Liaise with parents / guardians, school administrative staff, and administrative support staff to comply with LDoE health directives (e.g., immunizations, hearing/vision screenings, etc.).
- Maintain student body health records per LDoE requirements.
- Administer medications to students per medication orders as written by medical providers.
- Establish procedures for reporting injuries / illnesses and the maintenance of associated medical records.
- Follow-up with parents / guardians and administrators after all health emergencies.
- Provide the cafeteria vendor with a list of students who have dietary restrictions.
- Serve on student support teams for special needs, disabled, and / or other at-risk or high-risk students.
- Collaborate with students, parents / guardians, and employees to improve community health. Conduct health and wellness surveillance of NOMMA activities and provide recommendations as required.
- Serve as the medical lead for all campus infectious disease protocols. Liaise with the Regional Medical Director, LDoE, LDoH, LHSAA, and OPSB as necessary.
- Notify NOMMA leadership of suspected child abuse, neglect, and / or mental health concerns in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements.
- Educate students and employees on medical related issues. Provide and / or contribute to health classes, staff training, and drills as required.
- Establish objectives, standards, and policies of a School Health Program, to include a budget. Coordinate with community health organizations as necessary.
- Coordinate with the Director of Operations to ensure school Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are inspected and repaired / replaced as necessary.
- Issue elevator passes to students with injuries or disabilities, as required.
- As required, assist school safety investigations that pertain to health and wellness of students.
- Research and recommend technology upgrades to enhance medical operations and record keeping.
- Advise parents / guardians and school employees of community medical resources.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to improve health education.
- Comply with all FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
- Perform other duties as directed.
