What is the Role?
Talent is our most important asset. Just as Coney Island Prep aims to deliver exceptional academic results for our scholars, our People Team creates the ecosystem in which our teachers and staff are supported and developed so they can thrive in their careers. The People Team is seeking a Director of HR who will serve as a people operations lead, designing and executing robust HR systems and strategy that contemplates every angle of employee experience. The Director of HR will oversee two HR Managers and will be comfortable leading others as well as jumping in to support the daily functions of the team.
Working closely with the entire People Team, the Director of HR will cultivate culture as well as implement our organizational mission rooted in Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice in every aspect of their work. The Director of Human Resources will report directly to the Chief Talent & Equity Officer.
What You’ll Be Asked To Do
Operate with Effectiveness by leading with a systems orientation to drive long-term, sustainable results and ensure compliance.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive HR process, systems, and data strategy that leverages technology and is aligned with the People Team and the organization’s overall goals and HR objectives, including but not limited to:
- Organizational job architecture
- Position control and organization chart
- Onboarding and offboarding processes
- Salary and additional compensation structure
- Oversight of the HR handbook and implementation of its processes
- HR data management and maintaining HR metrics
- Benefits and disciplinary processes
- Identify, present, and analyze team data to provide valuable insights for decision-making and strategic planning
- Assess current HR tools and systems landscape, identify gaps and areas for improvement, provide training and support to users, and drive adoption across the organization including:
- Measurement of organizational engagement
- Oversight of the annual intent to return process
- HR compliance such as I-9 auditing, HR data requests required for grants or broader compliance, teacher certification oversight and monitoring, adhoc HR compliance projects
- Demonstrate ownership through effective planning that accounts for all stakeholders and outcomes
Collaborate and Co-Lead by building trust-based relationships and navigating across layers and departments to achieve challenging goals that drive the organization's overall talent and equity vision, priorities and strategy.
- Partner with network teams, including the Finance team, to maximize efficiency and accuracy of our collaborative processes to ensure appropriate controls and structures are aligned between the HR and finance functions
- Oversee end to end HR processes including employee lifecycle from onboarding to offboarding, and collaborating across multiple teams and functions to lead best in class employee experience
- Create and oversee HR metrics reporting; analyze HR data and systems, identify technology solutions, and provide data-driven insights and recommendations to present to organizational leaders and stakeholders
- Establish and enforce data governance policies and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations to protect employee information and maintain data integrity
- Stay current with HR system and process trends and best practices; continuously assess and improve the organization’s HR capabilities
- Maintain accuracy of employee information and data and needs within HRIS, in partnership with the People Team
- Support HR leadership in meeting organizational goals and priorities

- Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years professional experience in an HR or people operations role; K-12 school experience preferred
- Interpersonal skills to foster trust-based relationships and adept at organizing complex deliverables and tasks for multiple stakeholders
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Self-reflective and open to frequent feedback, with the ambition and desire to grow and develop
- Driven and eager to lean into ambiguity and move vision and plans to action and outcomes
- A positive, solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
- Team-first collaborator and communicator
- Strong data collection, analysis, and presentation skills that allow others to contextualize a problem and act responsively
- Experience leading vendor relationships (i.e., HRIS)
- Ability to travel to all four of Coney Island Prep’s campuses
Benefits and Compensation
- Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The starting salary for this role is $95,000 - 125,000.
- As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
- Staff are provided with a MacBook Air and access to all the necessary technology and resources needed to succeed in their role.
