Position Title: Allergy Nurse
Reports To: Tracy Byerly II, MD, Physician Assistants, Practice Manager, Charge Nurse
Position Summary
An allergy/immunology nurse focuses on the care of patients with chronic allergic conditions. These conditions include asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and atopic dermatitis. Duties include providing direct patient care and health education and, in rare cases, treatment of anaphylaxis.
Clinical Duties
· Conduct patient interviews and evaluate medical history to identify and assess allergies.
· Administer allergy tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests, to determine specific allergens.
· Educate patients about their allergies, including triggers, prevention strategies, and treatment options.
· Develop individualized allergy management plans based on patient’s needs, symptoms, and medical history.
· Assist in selecting appropriate medications for allergy control, including prescription medications and immunotherapy.
· Provide allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy (under the tongue) to patients who require allergen desensitization.
· Monitor and document patient progress and response to treatment, making necessary adjustments to therapy.
· Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive allergy care for patients.
· Educate and train other healthcare professionals on allergy management and treatment.
· Keep up to date with current research and developments in the field of allergology.
· Conduct research on allergies, adverse reactions, and treatment modalities to contribute to ongoing knowledge in the field.
· Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes.
· Adhere to infection control and safety protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
· Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families regarding the impact of allergies on their daily lives.
· Educate patients and their families on proper use of epinephrine in instance of anaphylactic reaction.
· Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including medical history, medications, treatments, and outcomes.
· Assist in scheduling and coordinating allergy testing, consultations, and follow-up appointments.
· Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, professional ethics, and legal requirements in providing allergy care.
· Serve as a resource for patients and their families, providing ongoing assistance and guidance in managing allergies.
· Collaborate with insurance providers to obtain necessary authorizations and facilitate reimbursement for allergy services.
Working Conditions
- Works in office areas and throughout the facility.
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during work hours.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Involved with patients, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.
- Communicates with the medical staff as well as other departments and leaderships.
- Attends and participates in continuing education programs.
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.

Pay: From $22.50 per hour
