The School Staff Nurse position is designed to provide direct medical care to the students at Cotting School. It is assumed that this position will be held by a person with the experience and ability to promote the smooth and effective operation of the department on a day-to-day basis.
You will work in collaboration with a team of nurses and other medical staff including the Medical Team Lead administrative staff, faculty and staff, students and parents.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Works within the nursing scope of practice and delivers competent, evidence-based nursing care to students. Provides all necessary clinical treatment as ordered/indicated.
- Establishes priorities of care effectively
- Works collaboratively with parents and healthcare providers to develop individualized healthcare plans for students.
- Appropriately responds to emergencies
- Administers medication safely and accurately
- Educates school personnel in regard to health related issues involving students
- Monitors the health status of students
- Maintains logs and records
- Documents student encounters thoroughly and accurately
- Provides personal care for students along with other members of the department
- Establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients (students) and families. Works collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Assumes responsibility for own professional growth.
- Demonstrates a high degree of interpersonal skills.
- Maintains current nursing skills and license
- Maintains CPR certification
- Participates in professional activities and continuing education
- Provides after-school, evening, and overnight trip nursing coverage as scheduled and shared among the department
- Any other duties which may be assigned in relation to health programs at the School.
HOURS of WORK:
Generally Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00pm, and 3:30 p.m on Wednesday during the school year and Monday-Friday 8:00-2:15 during the Extended School Year (ESY). This is a 209 day position including the summer term.
For this position, no exact schedule can be guaranteed. It is expected that the School Nursing staff will work as necessary to perform the tasks associated with this assignment. Occasional attendance during evening events is expected as well as annual overnight ski and senior trips.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- The School Staff Nurse will adhere to all stated requirements as specified in the personnel handbook as appropriate and/or in the individual employee contract. Such matters as hours of attendance, participation at approved conferences, and various procedural items would be among those delineated in the handbook.
- The School Staff Nurse must be a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with training and experience appropriate to the assignment.
- A minimum of an Associates Degree in Nursing is required.
- The physical ability to properly lift and position students, for their personal care/toileting needs as necessary with or without the use of a mechanical lift. A physical examination may be required prior to assuming the position.
- A demonstrated ability to manage a complex department, "problem solve" effectively and work creatively with students who have difficult medical problems.
- Fingerprinting and Criminal Offender Record Information (C.O.R.I.) background check.
