JOB TITLE: Education Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Program Director
Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots, civil society organization dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and the United States, particularly their rights to develop their individual potential, to self-determination, and to be represented in all areas of life: political, social, cultural, and economic. WAW advocates for women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence wherever opportunities arise to influence attitudes and bring about change.
Position Summary
WAW’s Education Coordinator will lead the Virginia Community Center’s (NYCC’s) adult empowerment classes, including classes for survivors of domestic violence, and provide support for WAW’s Know Your Rights community education program. The Education Coordinator will also oversee the activities conducted by the NYCC’s Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator and Youth Program Coordinator. The Education Coordinator is a full-time position and will report directly to the NYCC Program Director.

Qualification:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required
- 2-3 years of successful work experience in the field of adult and youth education program
- Language skills in Dari, Pashto strongly prefer
- A passion and desire to work with, and advocate for the immigrant/refugee community
- Leadership skills in management of teachers and volunteers
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to use technology for pre and post testing of the participants
- Knowledge of the Best Plus testing is preferred, but not required
- Ability to record keeping of the students' progress report
- Ability to speak effectively and persuasively to participants, staff, and community groups
- Strong networking skills
- Ability to create a safe, respectful, positive, fun, and welcoming environment by modeling professionalism and utilizing positive feedback methods
- Must be organized and have great attention to detail
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Adult empowerment classes
- Manages and oversees English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for women, citizenship classes for women and men, driver’s education, Women’s Circles, vocational sewing class for survivors, and any additional programs for adults that may be developed
- Conduct check-ins with the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator, Youth Program Coordinator, as well as the program participants and ensure they are aware of schedules and any logistical issues that may arise
- Conduct regular program monitoring and periodic evaluation of adult empowerment classes with the Program Manager and, if needed, the Advancement team
- Seek opportunities to partner and collaborate with organizations in the Fresh Meadows area to maximize the resources of the NYCC’s adult empowerment programs
- Recruit students through community events, meetings, and outreach
Educational programs for survivors of domestic violence (DV)
- Manages and oversees educational programs for women and survivors of DV, including Women’s Circle, vocational sewing/tailoring class, and any additional programs that may be developed
- Serve as the liaison with WAW’s partners for education programs, including but not limited to CONNECT, in coordination with the Program Manager and Advancement team, if necessary
- Organize DV training and workshops for WAW staff, community members, faith leaders, NYPD, and other stakeholders, in coordination with WAW’s Program Director and partner organizations
- Organize focus group discussions for participants and stakeholders of the DV program
- Organize and participate in check-ins and curriculum development with CONNECT and other partners that may be developed
- Coordinate with other NYCC staff to consolidate all data on survivors of DV and the services they receive
Recruitment and relationship-building
- Coordinate and co-facilitate WAW’s Know Your Rights and domestic violence workshops, including Women’s Circle, with the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator
- Disseminate materials, information, and resources on WAW’s adult empowerment classes and programs for survivors of domestic violence
- Engage and coordinate with government and community organizations to increase participation in workshops and NYCC educational and vocational classes
- Conduct a needs assessment to inform the development and advancement of WAW’s services and programming
- Perform outreach in Fresh Meadows Queen to identify communities/populations in need of assistance and services, as well as potential partners, in coordination with the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator
- Refer participants to relevant partner organizations and agencies, and monitor services received by participants
- Regularly survey participants and evaluate community needs to inform WAW programming and services
Organizational responsibilities
- Contribute to staff and partner meetings and funder site visits.
- Provide the Program Manager with monthly updates, or upon request, of all program activities.
- Develop surveys for programs, training, and workshops identified above.
- Conduct regular program monitoring, including data entry and analysis.
- Incorporate WAW’s mission and values into all community outreach initiatives and events in which serving as a WAW representative; and
- Attend conferences, workshops, presentations, and other events as required and/or approved by the Program Director.
